Let’s get back to the topic of skincare….
It can be confusing, its vast, it can be VERY VERY expensive. Knowing where to place your trust and your money is the biggest question. And it was for me too.
We all want the same thing, (while having vastly different skin and needs) we want results. We want to trust what we are using. We want it to make a difference.
Here are my top recommendations for addressing wrinkles, hydration, firmness, break outs, aging, the sun, and every day skin stressors. Some might be surprising, some you can do on your own without much effort or expense. Let’s get practical and discover your best bets.
The 3 major causes of aging skin are:
- Sun Exposure
We can address any and all of these. Consistency is always going to be the biggest factor.
Limit sun exposure, especially your face (this includes MEN!), and décolleté. Wear a mineral or physical sunscreen, (not chemical). Again, this includes Men. Yes, you do need skincare and you should really consider a sunscreen.
Hydrate. Hydrate. Hydrate!
Why is it so hard to get enough water! We know we need it, and by the time you are feeling dry, you’re already dehydrated. So here’s the plan. Drink more water.
The formula for what is the minimum amount of water your body needs per day….Your weight divided by 2 = Is what you need to drink in ounces every day.
Example: If you weigh 128 lbs divided by 2 = 64 ounces of water per day. My water bottle is 24 ounces, so I drink 3 bottles per day (72 ounces, close enough!).
Volume – the reason we start to droop.
We all lose volume as we age. We lose volume in the cheek area first. Over time, our body produces less collagen, elastin and the fat pads in the face reduce in size.
Guess what happens? When you lose the upper layers of deep fat pockets, like our cheeks….our face slowly begins to fall. Volume needs to be restored where it is lost, not necessarily where it is visible.
Replace the volume….
- Hyaluronic acid depletes with age. Put it back. Use a good quality Hyaluronic acid. Combine the use with a daily Gua Sha treatment, (again something you can do yourself), which enhances absorption. Ensure you use appropriate oil with your stone so that it doesn’t drag on your skin. See below for recommendations.
Additionally, using a home roller will also increase absorption of Hyal. Not all home treatment rollers are the same! Please be wary of copycat brands that can cause excessive damage. I recommend only Dermaspark Homecare rollers. I love Amazon too, but this is the one thing you DO NOT want to buy from Amazon. Please message me for more information if you want to purchase a home care roller. I am also an approved supplier for the original and authentic Dermaroller brand.
Use A Vitamin C Serum
An antioxidant like Vitamin C neutralizes the effects of free radicals. Vitamin C destabilizes easily when exposed to light or oxygen. To ensure you get the best, choose a Vitamin C packaging that is in a dark and sealed container, like a pump. Jars where you remove the lid for access are not recommended for Vitamin C.
This serum should be applied in the mornings.
This is important. Retinol connects to your skin cell receptors and say, “Its time to regenerate and behave like a healthy younger skin cell.”
Retinol also encourages collagen production, which is something else that diminishes with age. Retinol is photo sensitive, and therefore should only be used at night. You can also choose a kindler gentler version, Vegan Bakuchiol Retinol.
Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body. When your body makes collagen, it combines amino acids — nutrients you get from eating protein-rich foods, like beef, chicken, fish, beans, eggs and dairy products.
Collagen is what keeps our skin from sagging, giving us that plump, youthful look.
As you age, your body stops producing as much collagen. However, you can put this back.
You really have 2 choices. Take a collagen supplement; the most popular sources are Bovine or Marine. The collagen is made by boiling animal bones, cartilage, and skin/hides for several hours until it produces a gelatin which is eventually ground into a powder. The challenge (for me at least), is trusting the animal source, and the process. The taste, also not so amazing.
Or choose a collagen creator that provides the material and amino acids required to boost your body’s own ability to produce collagen. Tastes amazing, (at least mine does), its Vegan, and my body has the ability to metabolize and use it.
Most people will begin to notice a difference taking Collagen supplement/creator in about 8 weeks.
A quick word about Glycine. It is the simplest of all Amino acids, and makes up about 33% of the Collagen in the human body. Glycine supports a wide range of healthy bodily functions, including normal cell growth and development. Enhances memory function, bone health and helps regulate blood sugar levels. It is also an Anti-inflammatory. It is naturally sweet and so so easy to love! I add this daily to my Collagen Key. And it is absolutely delicious!!
Acne and Breakouts
When you skin is happy and balanced, tone and texture will improve. Break outs will cease. One note about acne….acne cannot survive in the presence of oxygen.
Oxygenate and acne will cease to thrive. The Bohr effect.
Consistency is Key. Find what works and keep doing it! The thing about aging is, it doesn’t stop. Don’t stop.
Drink Water. At least 64 ounces per day.
Use a Gua Sha stone daily for great absorbency of your topicals. Use a good quality oil with your stone. The stone should ‘slip’ on your skin, not pull. Rejuveniqe or Rose Hip Oil are good choices.
A minimum skincare program should consist of:
Target (Serum. A different serum for day and night. Vitamin C is for day, Retinol is for night).
Protect (Physical or Mineral sunscreen. Not chemical).
It doesn’t have to be complicated. There are a lot of choices out there, I hope this helps narrow the list for you. Consultations are always free. If you need help or advice, please message me and let’s get started on the path to the best skin of your life, everyday.
